La coevoluzione
Nella biologia, la coevoluzione è "il cambiamento di un oggetto biologico innescato dal cambiamento di un oggetto correlato". La coevoluzione può avvenire a molti livelli biologici: può essere microscopico come mutazioni correlate tra amminoacidi in una proteina o macroscopici come tratti covariosi tra diverse specie in un ambiente. Ogni partito in un rapporto coevoluzionario esercita pressioni selettive sull'altro, compromettendo così l'evoluzione dell'altro. La coevoluzione delle specie diverse comprende l'evoluzione di una specie ospitante e dei suoi parassiti, e gli esempi del mutismo che si evolvono nel tempo. L'evoluzione in risposta a fattori abiotici, come il cambiamento climatico, non è la coevoluzione biologica. La conclusione generale è che la coevoluzione può essere responsabile di gran parte della diversità genetica vista nelle normali popolazioni, tra cui: polimorfismo del plasma sanguigno, polimorfismo proteico, sistemi di istocompatibilità, ecc. Ci sono poche prove di coevoluzione che conducono cambiamenti su larga scala nella storia terrestre, in quanto abiotici Fattori come l'estinzione di massa e l'espansione in ecospace sembrano guidare gli spostamenti nell'abbondanza dei principali gruppi.
