Il punto di intersezione sul lato opposto dello spazio colore dà la lunghezza d'onda complementare, che quando aggiunta al colore in questione nella giusta proporzione darà il colore dell'illuminante. In situazioni in cui non è specificata alcuna particolare illuminazione, è comune discutere la lunghezza d'onda dominante in termini di illuminante standard, come la luce bianca a spettro piatto.
