Motore composto
Un motore composto è un motore che ha più stadi per il recupero dell'energia dal medesimo fluido di lavoro, con lo scarico dalla prima fase che passa attraverso la seconda fase, e in alcuni casi poi ad un'altra tappa successiva o addirittura stadi. Originariamente inventata come un mezzo per rendere i motori a vapore più efficienti, è stata utilizzata anche la combinazione di motori con l'uso di più fasi sui motori a combustione interna e continua ad avere mercati di nicchia. Le fasi di un motore composto possono essere di diversa o di tecnologie analoghe, ad esempio: ▪ In un motore turbo-composto il gas di scarico dai cilindri passa attraverso una turbina, le due fasi sono dissimili. ▪ In una locomotiva a vapore composto il vapore passa dal cilindro ad alta pressione o dai cilindri al cilindro a bassa pressione o ai cilindri, le due fasi risultano simili. ▪ In un motore a vapore triplo di espansione il vapore passa attraverso tre cilindri successivi di dimensioni crescenti e diminuzione della pressione. Questi motori erano i motori marini più comuni nell'era dell'oro del vapore. Questi esempi e turbine componibili sono i principali ma non l'unica utilità di comprimere nei motori, vedi sotto.
