La cooperatività è un fenomeno mostrato da sistemi che coinvolgono elementi identici o quasi identici, che agiscono in modo non indipendente l'uno dall'altro, relativamente ad un ipotetico sistema non interagente standard in cui gli elementi individuali agiscono in modo indipendente. Una manifestazione di questo è enzimi o recettori che hanno siti di legame multipli dove l'affinità dei siti di legame per un legante è apparentemente aumentata, la cooperatività positiva o la diminuita cooperatività negativa, sul legame di un ligando a un sito di legame. Ad esempio, l'affinità dei quattro siti di legame dell'emoglobina per l'ossigeno è aumentata rispetto a quella dell'emoglobina non legata quando si lega la prima molecola di ossigeno. Questo è indicato come legame cooperativo. Vediamo anche la cooperatività in molecole di grandi catene realizzate in molte sottogruppi identici, quando tali molecole subiscono transizioni di fase come fusione, svolgimento o svolgimento.
