La contropiede, o la legge di Thayer, è una forma di camuffamento. La contropunta è il modello della colorazione animale in cui la pigmentazione di un animale è più scura sul lato superiore e più leggera sul lato inferiore del corpo. Questo modello si trova in molte specie di mammiferi, rettili, uccelli e pesci ed è esistito da almeno il periodo del Cretaceo. Quando la luce cade su un oggetto uniformemente colorato come una sfera dall'alto, fa apparire il lato superiore più chiaro e la parte inferiore scura, che si classifica da uno all'altro. Questo modello di luce e ombra rende l'oggetto sembrato solido e quindi funge da indicatore visivo che rende l'oggetto più facile da individuare. La riduzione della contrazione riduce la facilità di individuazione di predatori e preda controbilanciando gli effetti dell'ombra di sé, di nuovo tipicamente con la classificazione dal buio alla luce. In teoria questo potrebbe essere utile per il camuffamento militare, ma in pratica è stato raramente applicato, nonostante i migliori sforzi dell'artista Abbott Handerson Thayer e zoologici come Hugh Cott. Un meccanismo connesso, contro-illuminazione, aggiunge la creazione di luce mediante bioluminescenza o lampade per abbinare la luminosità reale di uno sfondo.
