Cryoconite
La crioconite è polveri polverose a vento, fatta di una combinazione di piccole particelle di roccia, di fuliggine e di microbi depositati e costruiti su neve, ghiacciai o ghiaccioli. L'oscurante, soprattutto dalle piccole quantità di fuliggine, assorbe la radiazione solare che scioglie la neve o il ghiaccio sotto il deposito e talvolta crea un foro di crioconite. La crioconite può contenere polvere da deserti o terreni agricoli lontani, particelle di eruzioni vulcaniche o emissioni di energia elettrica e fuliggine. È stato descritto e nominato da Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld quando ha viaggiato sul ghiacciaio della Groenlandia nel 1870. Durante l'estate, i fori crioconiti spesso contengono acqua liquida e forniscono così una nicchia per i microorganismi adatti al freddo come batteri e alghe per prosperare. Il Soot riduce la riflessività, o l'albedo di ghiaccio, aumentando l'assorbimento del calore. Cryoconite viene costantemente aggiunto a formazioni di neve e ghiaccio insieme alla neve. È sepolto nella neve o nel ghiaccio, ma quando si scioglie la neve o il ghiaccio, in superficie aumenta quantità di materiale scuro, accelerando la fusione.
