Cuneiforme
Lo script cuneiformo è uno dei più antichi sistemi di scrittura noti, distinti dai segni a forma di cuneo su tavolette di argilla, realizzate per mezzo di una canna stretta per uno stilo. Il nome stesso cuneiforme significa semplicemente "cuneo a forma", dal cuneo latino "cuneo" e forma "forma", ed è venuto in uso inglese probabilmente da vecchia francese cunéiforme. Emergendo a Sumer nel tardo 4 millennio aC, la scrittura cuneiforme è iniziata come un sistema di pittogrammi. Nel terzo millennio, le rappresentazioni pittoriche diventarono semplificate e più astratte, poiché il numero di personaggi in uso è cresciuto di più, da circa 1.000 all'età del Bronzo Primo a circa 400 nell'età del bronzo tardo. Il sistema è costituito da una combinazione di segni logofonici, consonanti, alfabetici e sillabali. Lo script originale sumerico è stato adattato per la scrittura delle lingue akkadiane, Eblaite, Elamite, Hittite, Luwian, Hattic, Hurrian e Urartian e ha ispirato gli alfabeti Ugaritici e gli Old Persian. La scrittura cuneiforme fu gradualmente sostituita dall'alfabeto fenicio durante l'impero neo-assiri.
