Fibrosi cistica
La fibrosi cistica, nota anche come mucoviscidosi, è un disordine genetico autosomico recessivo che colpisce in modo più critico i polmoni e anche il pancreas, il fegato e l'intestino. È caratterizzato da un trasporto anormale di cloruro e sodio attraverso un epitelio, portando a secrezioni spesse e viscose. La fibrosi cistica si riferisce alla caratteristica formazione di cicatrici e cisti all'interno del pancreas, riconosciuta per la prima volta negli anni Trenta. La difficoltà di respirazione è il sintomo più grave e risulta da infezioni polmonari frequenti che vengono trattate con antibiotici e altri farmaci. Altri sintomi, tra cui le infezioni del seno, la scarsa crescita e l'infertilità, influenzano altre parti del corpo. CF è causato da una mutazione frameshift nel gene per la regolazione della conducibilità transmembrana della fibrosi cistica. Questa proteina è necessaria per regolare i componenti del sudore, dei liquidi digestivi e del muco. CFTR regola il movimento di ioni di cloruro e di sodio attraverso membrane epiteliali, come l'epitelio alveolare presente nei polmoni.
