Le citochine sono una categoria ampia e allentata di piccole proteine importanti per la segnalazione cellulare: vengono rilasciate dalle cellule e influenzano il comportamento di altre cellule e talvolta la cellula che rilascia. Le citochine includono le chemochine, gli interferoni, le interleuchine, le linfocine, il fattore di necrosi del tumore, ma in genere non sono ormoni o fattori di crescita. Le citochine sono prodotte da un'ampia gamma di cellule, tra cui cellule immunitarie come macrofagi, linfociti B, linfociti T e mast cellule, così come cellule endoteliali, fibroblasti e diverse cellule stromali; Una determinata citochina può essere prodotta da più di un tipo di cellula.
