I dendriti sono le proiezioni ramificate di un neurone che agiscono per propagare la stimolazione elettrochimica ricevuta da altre cellule neurali al corpo cellulare, o soma, del neurone da cui proiettano i dendriti. La stimolazione elettrica viene trasmessa sui dendriti dai neuroni a monte tramite sinapsi che si trovano in vari punti dell'albero dendritico. Le cellule dendritiche sono cellule che presentano antigene nel sistema immunitario mammifero. I loro dendriti non elaborano segnali elettrici. I dendriti sono uno dei due tipi di protrusioni protoplasmatiche che estrudono dal corpo cellulare di un neurone, mentre l'altro tipo è un assone. Axons può essere distinto dai dendriti da diverse funzionalità tra cui forma, lunghezza e funzione. I dendriti spesso si abbassano nella forma e sono più corti, mentre gli assoni tendono a mantenere un raggio costante e sono relativamente lunghi.
