Descrizione linguistica
Nello studio della lingua, della descrizione o della linguistica descrittiva, è l'opera di analizzare oggettivamente e descrivere come viene parlato da un gruppo di persone in una comunità linguistica. Tutta la ricerca scolastica in linguistica è descrittiva; Come tutte le altre scienze, il suo scopo è quello di osservare il mondo linguistico così com'è, senza la biasità di idee preconcette su come dovrebbe essere. La moderna linguistica descrittiva si basa su un approccio strutturale al linguaggio, come esemplificato nell'opera di Leonard Bloomfield e altri. La descrizione linguistica è spesso contrastata con la prescrizione linguistica, che si trova soprattutto nell'istruzione e nella pubblicazione. La prescrizione ha lo scopo di definire forme linguistiche standard e di dare consiglio sull'uso efficace delle lingue, e può essere considerato come una presentazione dei frutti della ricerca descrittiva in una forma imparabile, anche se si basa anche su aspetti più soggettivi dell'estetica linguistica. La prescrizione e la descrizione sono complementari, ma hanno priorità diverse e talvolta sono in conflitto. Il descrittivismo è la convinzione che la descrizione sia più significativa o importante per insegnare, studiare e praticare che la prescrizione.
