Il Libro di Deuteronomio è il quinto libro della Bibbia ebraica e della Torah / Pentateuca ebraica. Il titolo ebraico è tratto dalla frase iniziale Eleh ha-devarim, "Queste sono le parole ..."; Il titolo inglese deriva da una traduzione mista greca della frase ebraica mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "una copia di questa legge", in Deuteronomio 17:18, riguardo alla deuteronomia touto - "questa seconda legge". Il libro è costituito da tre prediche o discorsi consegnati agli Israeliti da Mosè sulle pianure di Moab, poco prima di entrare nella Terra Promessa. Il primo sermone ricapitola i quarant'anni di vagabondi selvaggi che hanno portato a questo momento e termina con un'esortazione per osservare la legge, in seguito denominata la legge di Mosè; Il secondo ricorda agli israeliti la necessità di una esclusiva fedeltà a un solo Dio e dell'osservanza delle leggi che ha dato loro, su cui dipende il possesso della terra; E il terzo offre la comodità che anche Israele si dimostri infedele e perde così la terra, con pentimento tutti possono essere ripristinati.

The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, and of the Jewish Torah/Pentateuch. The Hebrew title is taken from the opening phrase Eleh ha-devarim, "These are the words..."; the English title is from a Greek mis-translation of the Hebrew phrase mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "a copy of this law", in Deuteronomy 17:18, as to deuteronomion touto – "this second law". The book consists of three sermons or speeches delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. The first sermon recapitulates the forty years of wilderness wanderings which have led to this moment, and ends with an exhortation to observe the law, later referred to as the Law of Moses; the second reminds the Israelites of the need for exclusive allegiance to one God and observance of the laws he has given them, on which their possession of the land depends; and the third offers the comfort that even should Israel prove unfaithful and so lose the land, with repentance all can be restored.
