Un dizionario è una raccolta di parole in una o più lingue specifiche, spesso elencate in ordine alfabetico, con l'utilizzo di informazioni, definizioni, etimologie, fonetica, pronuncia, traduzione e altre informazioni; O un libro di parole in una lingua con i loro equivalenti in un altro, noto anche come lessico. Secondo Nielsen un dizionario può essere considerato un prodotto leksografico caratterizzato da tre caratteristiche significative: è stato preparato per una o più funzioni; Contiene i dati che sono stati selezionati per soddisfare tali funzioni; E le sue strutture lessicografiche legano e stabiliscono relazioni tra i dati in modo da poter soddisfare le esigenze degli utenti e soddisfare le funzioni del dizionario. Una grande distinzione tra dizionari generali e specializzati.
