Un dilatometro è uno strumento scientifico che misura i cambiamenti di volume causati da un processo fisico o chimico. Un'applicazione familiare di un dilatometro è il termometro in mercurio in vetro, in cui la variazione del volume della colonna liquida viene letti da una scala graduata. Poiché il mercurio ha una velocità di espansione abbastanza costante rispetto alle normali temperature, le variazioni del volume sono direttamente correlate alla temperatura.
