Millipedes (classe Diplopoda) sono artropodi miriadi che hanno due paia di gambe sulla maggior parte dei segmenti del corpo. Ogni segmento a due zampe è il risultato di due singoli segmenti fusi insieme (il nome "Diplopoda" deriva dalle parole greche διπλοῦς (diplous), "double" e ποδός (podos), "foot"). La maggior parte dei millipedi hanno corpi estremamente allungati cilindrici o appiattiti con più di 20 segmenti, mentre i millipiedi della pillola sono più corti e possono scorrere in una palla, come un pizzico. Il nome "millipede" è una parola composta formata dalle radici latine mille ("mille") e pes ("piede"). Nonostante il loro nome, nessuno millipede conosciuto ha 1.000 gambe, anche se la specie rara Illacme plenipes ha fino a 750. Specie comuni hanno tra 36 e 400 gambe. Ci sono circa 12.000 specie chiamate in ca. 140 famiglie. La specie più lunga è il millipede gigante africano (Archispirostreptus gigas). La maggior parte dei millipedi sono detritivori a lento movimento, che consumano foglie decadenti e altre piante morte. Tuttavia, essi possono anche essere piccoli parassiti da giardino, specialmente nelle serre dove possono causare gravi danni ai semenzali emergenti.
