Un segnale di soccorso è un mezzo riconosciuto a livello internazionale per ottenere aiuto. I segnali di soccorso hanno la forma o sono comunemente compilati usando segnali radio, visualizzando un elemento visivo rilevato o l'illuminazione o effettuando un suono udibile da una distanza. Un segnale di soccorso indica che una persona o gruppo di persone, navi, aerei o altri veicoli sono minacciati da pericoli gravi e imminenti e richiedono assistenza immediata. L'utilizzo di segnali di soccorso in altre circostanze può essere contro il diritto locale o internazionale. Per rendere più efficace la segnalazione di emergenza, è necessario comunicare due parametri: ▪ Avviso o notifica di un disturbo in corso ▪ Posizione o posizione del partito in difficoltà. Ad esempio, un singolo flare aereo avvisa gli osservatori dell'esistenza di una nave in difficoltà da qualche parte nella direzione generale dell'avvistamento all'orizzonte, ma si spegne in un minuto o meno. Un bruciore a mano si brucia per 3 minuti e può essere utilizzato per localizzare o individuare più precisamente l'esatta posizione o la posizione del partito in guai. Un EPIRB notifica o avvisa le autorità e, allo stesso tempo, fornisce informazioni sull'indicazione della posizione.
