Divergenza
Nel calcolo vettoriale, la divergenza è un operatore vettoriale che misura l'entità di una sorgente o un dispersore del campo vettoriale in un determinato punto, in termini di scalare firmato. Più tecnicamente, la divergenza rappresenta la densità di volume del flusso esteriore di un campo vettoriale da un volume infinitesimale attorno ad un determinato punto. Ad esempio, considerare l'aria quando viene riscaldata o raffreddata. Il campo vettoriale rilevante per questo esempio è la velocità dell'aria in movimento ad un punto. Se l'aria viene riscaldata in una regione, si espanderà in tutte le direzioni in modo tale che il campo di velocità sia rivolto verso l'esterno da quella regione. Di conseguenza, la divergenza del campo di velocità in quella regione avrebbe un valore positivo, in quanto la regione è una fonte. Se l'aria si raffredda e si contrae, la divergenza ha un valore negativo, poiché la regione è un lavandino.
