Test genetici
Il test genetico, noto anche come test del DNA, consente la diagnosi genetica delle vulnerabilità alle malattie ereditate e può anche essere utilizzato per determinare il genitore di un figlio o in generale la nascita di una persona. Oltre a studiare i cromosomi al livello dei singoli geni, i test genetici in senso più ampio includono test biochimici per la possibile presenza di malattie genetiche o forme mutanti di geni associati ad un aumento del rischio di sviluppare disturbi genetici. Il test genetico identifica i cambiamenti nei cromosomi, nei geni o nelle proteine. La maggior parte del tempo, il test viene utilizzato per trovare i cambiamenti che sono associati a disturbi ereditati. I risultati di un test genetico possono confermare o escludere una condizione genetica sospetta o aiutare a determinare la possibilità di una persona di sviluppare o di passare un disturbo genetico. Sono attualmente in uso diversi centinaia di test genetici e sono in corso di sviluppo. Poiché le mutazioni genetiche possono influenzare direttamente la struttura delle proteine che codificano, è possibile anche eseguire prove di malattie genetiche specifiche osservando quelle proteine oi loro metaboliti, oppure guardando cromosomi macchiati o fluorescenti sotto un microscopio.
