CHE SIGNIFICA DUTCH DISEASE IN INGLESE

Nell'economia, la malattia olandese è la relazione apparente tra l'aumento dello sviluppo economico delle risorse naturali e una diminuzione del settore manifatturiero. Il meccanismo è che un aumento delle entrate provenienti dalle risorse naturali renderebbe più forte la valuta di una nazione rispetto a quella di altre nazioni, dando luogo alle altre esportazioni della nazione che diventano più costose per gli altri paesi a comprare e le importazioni diventano meno economiche, rendendo il settore manifatturiero meno competitivo. Mentre si riferisce più spesso alla scoperta delle risorse naturali, può anche riferirsi a "qualsiasi sviluppo che comporti un grande afflusso di valuta estera, tra cui un forte aumento dei prezzi delle risorse naturali, l'assistenza estera e gli investimenti diretti esteri". Il termine è stato coniato nel 1977 da The Economist per descrivere il declino del settore manifatturiero nei Paesi Bassi dopo la scoperta di un grande campo del gas naturale nel 1959.
