CHE SIGNIFICA DUTCH ELM DISEASE IN INGLESE
Malattia olmica olandese
La malattia dell'olmo olandese è causata da un membro dei funghi sac che colpiscono gli alberi di olmo ed è diffuso dal coleottero del ceppo di olmo. Sebbene credesse di essere originariamente originario dell'Asia, la malattia è stata accidentalmente introdotta in America e in Europa, dove ha devastato popolazioni nativi di olmi che non avevano avuto l'opportunità di evolvere la resistenza alla malattia. Il nome "malattia dell'olmo olandese" si riferisce alla sua identificazione nel 1921 e in seguito nei Paesi Bassi dai fitopatologi olandesi Bea Schwarz e Christine Buisman che entrambi hanno lavorato con il professor Johanna Westerdijk. La malattia non è specifica per l'ibrido olandese.
