L'Associazione europea di libero scambio è un'organizzazione di libero scambio tra quattro paesi europei che opera in parallelo con l'Unione europea e con essa. L'EFTA è stata istituita il 3 maggio 1960 come alternativa al blocco commerciale per gli Stati europei che non erano in grado o non desideravano aderire alla Comunità economica allora europea che è ormai diventata l'UE. La Convenzione di Stoccolma, che istituisce l'EFTA, è stata firmata il 4 gennaio 1960 nella capitale svedese da sette paesi. I membri dell'EFTA di oggi sono l'Islanda, il Liechtenstein, la Norvegia e la Svizzera, di cui gli ultimi due membri fondatori. La Convenzione di Stoccolma iniziale è stata sostituita dalla Convenzione di Vaduz, che ha permesso una maggiore liberalizzazione del commercio tra gli Stati membri. Gli Stati EFTA hanno concluso congiuntamente accordi di libero scambio con altri paesi. I paesi dell'EFTA fanno parte del mercato interno dell'Unione europea; Islanda, Liechtenstein e Norvegia attraverso l'accordo su uno Spazio economico europeo e la Svizzera attraverso una serie di accordi bilaterali.

La definizione di EFTA nel dizionario è European Free Trade Association; istituito nel 1960 per eliminare le tariffe commerciali sui prodotti industriali; ora comprende Norvegia, Svizzera, Islanda e Liechtenstein.
