Ekistics
Il termine Ekistics si applica alla scienza degli insediamenti umani. Esso include la pianificazione regionale, la città, la pianificazione della comunità e la progettazione abitativa. Comprende lo studio di tutti i tipi di insediamenti umani, in vista della geografia e dell'ecologia - l'ambiente fisico - e della psicologia umana e dell'antropologia, culturale, politica e, talvolta, estetica. Attualmente, come metodo scientifico di studi si basa su statistiche e descrizione, organizzato in cinque elementi ecistici: natura, antropologia, società, conchiglie e reti. È generalmente un campo più scientifico che la pianificazione urbana, e ha notevoli sovrapposizioni con alcuni dei campi meno restrittivi della teoria architettonica. Nell'applicazione, vengono attuate delle conclusioni volte a raggiungere l'armonia tra gli abitanti di un insediamento e gli ambienti fisici e socio-culturali.
