Un elettrodo è una corrente elettrica che attraversa la regione E della ionosfera terrestre. Ci sono due elettrodi: sopra l'equatore magnetico, e vicino ai cerchi polari nordici e meridionali. Gli elettrodi sono correnti Hall che sono trasportate principalmente da elettroni a quota 100-150 km. In questa regione la frequenza del giroscopio elettronico è molto più grande della frequenza di collisione elettronica-neutra. Al contrario, i principali ioni regionali di E hanno i girofrequenze molto inferiori alla frequenza di collisione ioni-neutra. Kristian Birkeland è stato il primo a suggerire che le correnti elettriche polari sono collegate ad un sistema di filamenti che scorrono lungo le linee del campo geomagnetico in e fuori dalla regione polare.
