Un elettrolita è una sostanza che ionizza quando viene disciolta in idonei solventi ionizzanti come acqua. Questo include i sali, gli acidi e le basi più solubili. Ad esempio, il gas di anidride carbonica si scioglie in acqua per produrre una soluzione che contiene idronium, carbonato e ioni di carbonato di idrogeno. Si noti che i sali fusi possono essere anche elettroliti.
