Un elettroscopio è uno strumento scientifico precoce che viene utilizzato per rilevare la presenza e la grandezza della carica elettrica su un corpo. Era il primo strumento di misura elettrico. Il primo elettroscopio, un ago ribaltato chiamato versorium, è stato inventato dal medico britannico William Gilbert intorno al 1600. Il potenziale elettrico o la tensione di un oggetto è uguale alla sua carica divisa per la sua capacità, in modo che gli elettroscopi possono essere considerati come voltmetri grezzi. L'accumulo di carica sufficiente per rilevare con un elettroscopio richiede centinaia o migliaia di volt, quindi gli elettroscopi vengono utilizzati solo con sorgenti ad alta tensione come l'elettricità statica e le macchine elettrostatiche.
