Emacs / iːmæks / ei suoi derivati sono una famiglia di editor di testo che sono caratterizzati dalla loro estensibilità. Steele, Jr. come set di Editor MACroS per l'editor TECO. È stato ispirato dalle idee dei TECO-macro editori TECMAC e TMACS. La versione più popolare e più portata di Emacs è GNU Emacs, creata da Stallman per il progetto GNU. XEmacs è una variante comune che è stata ramificata da GNU Emacs nel 1991. Entrambe le varianti utilizzano Emacs Lisp e sono per la maggior parte compatibili tra di loro.
