Ericoid
La parola "ericoid" viene usata nella terminologia biologica moderna per i suoi significati letterali e per le estensioni. Etimologicamente la parola deriva da due radici greche attraverso gli adattamenti latini. In primo luogo, il nome greco antico per le piante ormai noto in inglese come "erica" era "ἐρείκη", ritenuto Latinizzato da Plinio come "Erica". Linnaeus, che scrisse prevalentemente in latino, usa Erica come il nome del genere che è ancora conosciuto come tale. Tuttavia, quando Linnaeus chiamò un organismo, usando un episodio specifico che lo descrisse come qualcosa di particolare, lo faceva generalmente aggiungendo il suffisso "-εεδενει". Questa è stata una contrazione di "-o + ειδος", denotando una somiglianza di forma. Nella sua forma latinizzata divenne: "-oidi". Un esempio è la voce 9413 Stilbe ericoides secondo l'Indice Plantarum di Wappler a Linnaeus "Specie Plantarum". Ulteriori derivazioni sono emerse alla necessità o alla convenienza, come ad esempio "-oidea". Di conseguenza, l'ericoide potrebbe avere più di un significato e è stato erroneamente applicato in letteratura.
