Zona fotica
La zona fotica, la zona eufotica o la zona del sole è la profondità dell'acqua in un lago o nell'oceano che è esposto a luce solare sufficiente per la fotosintesi. Si estende dalla superficie fino ad una profondità dove l'intensità della luce cade all'1% di quella della superficie, chiamata profondità eufotica. Di conseguenza, il suo spessore dipende dalla portata dell'attenuazione della luce nella colonna d'acqua. Le profondità eufotiche tipiche variano da pochi centimetri nei laghi eutrofici altamente turbati, a circa 200 metri nell'oceano aperto. Dipende anche dalle variazioni stagionali della torbidità. Poiché la zona fotica è dove si verifica quasi tutta la produttività primaria, la profondità della zona fotica è generalmente proporzionale al livello di produttività primaria che si verifica in quella zona dell'oceano. Circa il 90% di tutta la vita marina vive nella zona fotica. Una piccola quantità di produzione primaria viene generata profondamente nella zona abissale attorno alle bocchette idrotermali che esistono lungo alcune creste mid-oceaniche. La zona che si estende dalla base della zona eufotica a circa 200 metri è talvolta chiamata zona dispotica.
