Un sistema eutettico del greco "ευ" e "Τήξις" è una miscela di composti chimici o elementi che hanno una sola composizione chimica che si solidifica a una temperatura inferiore a qualsiasi altra composizione costituita dagli stessi ingredienti. Questa composizione è conosciuta come la composizione eutettica e la temperatura alla quale si solidifica è conosciuta come la temperatura eutettica. In un diagramma di fase l'intersezione della temperatura eutettica e la composizione eutettica dà il punto eutettico. Le miscele non eutettiche mostreranno la solidificazione di un componente della miscela prima dell'altro. Non tutte le leghe binarie hanno un punto eutettico; Per esempio, nel sistema d'oro-argento la temperatura di fusione e la temperatura di congelamento aumentano monotonicamente in quanto il mix cambia da argento puro a oro puro.
