Nell'intelligenza artificiale, un algoritmo evolutivo è un sottoinsieme del calcolo evolutivo, un generico algoritmo di ottimizzazione metaheuristica basata sulla popolazione. Un EA utilizza meccanismi ispirati all'evoluzione biologica, come la riproduzione, la mutazione, la ricombinazione e la selezione. Le soluzioni candidate al problema dell'ottimizzazione svolgono il ruolo degli individui in una popolazione e la funzione fitness determina la qualità delle soluzioni. L'evoluzione della popolazione si svolge dopo l'applicazione ripetuta di questi operatori. L'evoluzione artificiale descrive un processo che coinvolge singoli algoritmi evolutivi; EA sono componenti individuali che partecipano ad un AE. Gli algoritmi evolutivi spesso eseguono ben approssimanti soluzioni a tutti i tipi di problemi, perché idealmente non fanno alcuna ipotesi sul paesaggio di base sottostante; Questa generalità è dimostrata dai successi in campi diversi come ingegneria, arte, biologia, economia, marketing, genetica, ricerca di operazioni, robotica, scienze sociali, fisica, politica e chimica.
