Infallibilità papale
L'infallibilità papale è un dogma della Chiesa cattolica che afferma che, in virtù della promessa di Gesù a Pietro, il Papa è preservato dalla possibilità di errore "Quando, nell'esercizio del suo incarico come pastore e maestro di tutti i cristiani, Virtù della sua suprema autorità apostolica, definisce una dottrina sulla fede o la morale che deve essere mantenuta da tutta la Chiesa ". Questa dottrina fu definita dogmaticamente nel Concilio Vaticano Primo Vaticano del 1869-1870, ma era stata difesa prima che esisteva già nella teologia medievale ed essendo la opinione maggioritaria all'epoca della Controriforma. Secondo la teologia cattolica, ci sono diversi concetti importanti per la comprensione della infallibile divina rivelazione: Sacra Scrittura, Sacra Tradizione e Sacro Magistero. Gli insegnamenti infallibili del Papa fanno parte del Sacro Magistero, che è anche costituito da consigli ecumenici e dal "magistero ordinario e universale". Nella teologia cattolica, l'infallibilità papale è uno dei canali dell'inferibilità della Chiesa. Gli insegnamenti infallibili del Papa devono basarsi, o almeno non contraddire, la Sacra Tradizione o la Sacra Scrittura.
