Esogene si riferisce ad un'azione o ad un oggetto proveniente da un sistema esterno. È l'opposto dell'entropia, qualcosa generato dall'interno del sistema. ▪ In un modello economico, un cambiamento esogeno è quello che proviene dall'esterno del modello e non è spiegato dal modello. Ad esempio, nel semplice modello di domanda e offerta, una modifica dei gusti o delle preferenze dei consumatori non è spiegata dal modello e porta anche a variazioni endogene della domanda che portano a variazioni del prezzo di equilibrio. Allo stesso modo, una modifica del reddito dei consumatori viene data al di fuori del modello. In un altro modo, una modifica esogena comporta un'alterazione di una variabile autonoma, cioè non influenzata dai funzionamenti del modello. ▪ Nella regressione lineare, significa che la variabile è indipendente da tutti gli altri valori di risposta. ▪ Nella biologia, "esogene" si riferisce ad un'azione o ad un oggetto proveniente dall'esterno di un sistema. Ad esempio, un agente di contrasto esogeno nell'immagine medica si riferisce ad un liquido iniettato nel paziente per via endovenosa che aumenta la visibilità di una patologia, ad esempio un tumore.
