Espressionismo
L'espressionismo era un movimento modernista, inizialmente in poesia e pittura, originario della Germania all'inizio del XX secolo. Il suo carattere tipico è quello di presentare il mondo esclusivamente da una prospettiva soggettiva, distorcendola radicalmente per effetto emozionale per evocare stati d'animo o idee. Gli artisti espressionisti cercavano di esprimere significato o esperienza emotiva piuttosto che realtà fisica. L'espressionismo è stato sviluppato come stile avanguardista prima della prima guerra mondiale. È rimasto popolare durante la Repubblica di Weimar, in particolare a Berlino. Lo stile si estende ad una vasta gamma di arti, tra cui l'architettura espressionista, la pittura, la letteratura, il teatro, la danza, il film e la musica. Il termine è talvolta suggestivo dell'angoscia. In generale, i pittori come Matthias Grünewald e El Greco sono talvolta definiti espressionisti, anche se in pratica il termine è applicato principalmente alle opere del XX secolo. L'enfasi espressionista sulla prospettiva individuale è stata caratterizzata come una reazione al positivismo e ad altri stili artistici come il naturalismo e l'impressionismo.
