Nella chimica organica, i gruppi funzionali sono gruppi specifici di atomi o di legami all'interno delle molecole che sono responsabili delle reazioni chimiche caratteristiche di quelle molecole. Lo stesso gruppo funzionale subirà la stessa o simile reazione chimica indipendentemente dalla dimensione della molecola in cui fa parte. Tuttavia, la relativa reattività può essere modificata dai gruppi funzionali vicini. La parola moiety / mɔɪəti / viene spesso usato sinonimo di "gruppo funzionale" ma, secondo la definizione IUPAC, una parte è una parte di una molecola che può includere gruppi interni o parti di gruppi funzionali come sottostrutture. Ad esempio, un estere ha un gruppo funzionale estere ed è composto da una parte alcossile e da una parte acilica, o, equivalentemente, può essere divisa in parti di carbossilato e alchile. Questa definizione consente una natura ricorsiva, in cui le parti possono contenere gruppi funzionali che possono contenere gruppi, ecc. Quasi senza limiti.
