Un gambit è un'apertura di scacchi in cui un giocatore, più spesso bianco, sacrifica materiale, di solito un pedone, con la speranza di ottenere una conseguente posizione vantaggiosa. Alcuni esempi ben noti sono il Gambit del Re, Gambit della Regina e Evans Gambit. Un gambit usato dal nero può anche essere chiamato un gambit, ma viene chiamato a volte come "controprogetto". La parola "gambit" è stata originariamente applicata alle aperture di scacchi nel 1561 dal sacerdote spagnolo Ruy López de Segura, da un espressione italiana dare il gambetto. Lopez ha studiato questa manovra e così la parola italiana ha ottenuto la forma spagnola gambita che ha portato alla gambit francese, che ha influenzato l'ortografia inglesi della parola. Il senso più ampio di "mossa di apertura inteso a guadagnare vantaggio" è stato registrato per la prima volta in inglese nel 1855.
