Gassificazione
La gassificazione è un processo che converte i materiali carboniosi a base di combustibili organici o fossili in monossido di carbonio, idrogeno e anidride carbonica. Ciò è ottenuto reagendo il materiale a temperature elevate, senza combustione, con una quantità controllata di ossigeno e / o vapore. La miscela di gas risultante è chiamata syngas o gas produttore ed è di per sé un combustibile. Il potere derivato dalla gassificazione e dalla combustione del gas risultante è considerato una fonte di energia rinnovabile se i composti gasificati sono stati ottenuti dalla biomassa. Il vantaggio della gassificazione è che l'utilizzo della singa è potenzialmente più efficace della combustione diretta del combustibile originale perché può essere combustata a temperature più elevate o addirittura in celle a combustibile, in modo che il limite superiore termodinamico all'efficienza definito dalla regola di Carnot sia più elevato o non applicabile. Le singe possono essere bruciate direttamente nei motori a gas, utilizzati per produrre metanolo e idrogeno o convertiti in un combustibile sintetico mediante il processo Fischer-Tropsch. La gassificazione può anche cominciare con materiali che altrimenti sarebbero stati smaltiti come i rifiuti biodegradabili.
