Sistema di sicurezza e sicurezza marittima globale
Il sistema globale di soccorso e sicurezza marittima è un insieme di procedure di sicurezza, tipi di attrezzature e protocolli di comunicazione concordati a livello internazionale per aumentare la sicurezza e rendere più facile il salvataggio di navi, imbarcazioni e aerei in difficoltà. Il GMDSS è costituito da diversi sistemi, alcuni dei quali nuovi, ma molti di essi sono in funzione da molti anni. Il sistema è destinato a svolgere le seguenti funzioni: avvisi, ricerca e salvataggio coordinamento, individuazione, trasmissioni di informazioni sulla sicurezza marittima, comunicazioni generali e comunicazioni ponte-ponte. I requisiti specifici per il trasporto di carichi dipendono dall'area di esercizio della nave, piuttosto che dal suo tonnellaggio. Il sistema fornisce anche mezzi ridondanti di allerta e segnalazioni di emergenza e fonti d'emergenza di potenza. Le navi da diporto non necessitano di soddisfare i requisiti di trasporto radio GMDSS, ma utilizzeranno sempre di più le radio VHF di chiamata digitale selettiva. Le navi offshore possono scegliere di equipaggiarsi ulteriormente. Le navi sottoposte a 300 tonnellate non sono soggette ai requisiti del GMDSS.
