Le onde generate dal vento sulla superficie dell'acqua sono esempi di onde gravitazionali, e le tsunami e le maree sono altre. Le onde di gravità generate dal vento sulla superficie libera degli stagni, dei laghi, dei mari e degli oceani hanno un periodo compreso tra 0,3 e 30 secondi. Le onde più corte sono influenzate anche dalla tensione superficiale e sono chiamate onde gravitazionali-capillari e onde capillari.
