La Grande Rift Valley è un nome dato alla fine del XIX secolo dall'esploratore britannico John Walter Gregory alla trincea continua geografica, a circa 6.000 chilometri di lunghezza, che va dalla Siria settentrionale al Mozambico centrale dell'Europa sudorientale. Il nome continua in alcuni usi, anche se oggi è considerato geologicamente impreciso poiché combina caratteristiche che oggi sono considerate come sistemi separati, sebbene collegati, di rottura e di guasto. I geologi si riferiscono generalmente a queste piastre incipienti come la piastra nubiana e la piastra somala.
