Hamites è un genere di ammonio eteromorfo che si è evoluto nella fase apicale del Cretaceo precoce e durò nella fase cenomanica del Cretaceo tardo. Il genere è quasi certamente paraphyletico, ma resta in largo uso come "catch all" per gli ammoniti eteromorfi della superfamiglia Turrilitaceae che non si adattano perfettamente ai raggruppamenti più derivati. Nel tentativo di identificare clades all'interno del genere, è stato diviso in una serie di nuovi generi o sottogenerati da diversi paleontologi, tra cui Eohamites, Hamitella, Helicohamites, Lytohamites, Planohamites, Psilohamites e Sziveshamites. La specie di tipo è Hamites attenuatus dall'inizio albiano, nominata da James Sowerby nella sua Concerazione Minerale della Gran Bretagna del 1814, anche se il genere stesso è stato creato da James Parkinson nel suo libro 1811 "Organic Remains of the Former World". Questo James Parkinson è meglio conosciuto come la prima descrizione scientifica di una malattia chiamata la paralisi di scossa, ora chiamata malattia di Parkinson in suo onore.
