È eterosamente una forma unica del polimorfismo e dell'ergogamia nei fiori. In una specie eterostile, nella popolazione esistono due o tre tipi morfologici di fiori, chiamati morph. Su ogni singola pianta, tutti i fiori condividono lo stesso morfo. I morphs del fiore differiscono nelle lunghezze del pistillo e stamens, e questi tratti non sono continui. Il fenotipo morfologico è geneticamente legato a geni responsabili di un sistema unico di autocompatibilità, definito autocompatibilità eteromorfica, cioè il polline da un fiore a un morfo non può concimare un altro fiore dello stesso morfo. Le piante eterostiliose aventi due morfoli di fiori sono denominati distillati. In un morfo gli stami sono corti e i pistilli sono lunghi; Nel secondo morfo gli stami sono lunghi e i pistilli sono brevi; La lunghezza del pistillo in un morph equivale alla lunghezza degli stammi nel secondo morph e viceversa. Esempi di piante distillate sono la primula e molte altre specie Primula, lino e altre specie Linum, alcune specie di Lythrum e molte specie di Cryptantha.
