Il timer Holddown funziona avendo ogni router inizio un timer quando ricevono prima informazioni su una rete non raggiungibile. Fino a quando il timer scade, il router scarterà tutti i messaggi di percorso successivi che indicano che l'itinerario è infatti raggiungibile. Può risolvere il caso in cui i router multipli sono collegati indirettamente. Ci sono scenari realistici in cui l'orizzonte Split e l'orizzonte diviso con inverso avvelenato non possono fare nulla. In altre parole, una holddown mantiene un router che riceve gli aggiornamenti dei percorsi finché la rete non sembra essere stabile, finché un'interfaccia non interrompe lo stato di modifica o viene appreso un percorso migliore. Le sequenze sono normalmente implementate con timer. Se il router rileva una rete non raggiungibile, il timer viene avviato. Il router allora attende un numero di secondi prestabilito fino a che la rete non sia stabile. Quando il timer scade, il router riceverà gli aggiornamenti di routing da altri router. Ad esempio in RIP il timer di default di set-point è impostato su 180 secondi.
