L'ipermetabolismo è lo stato fisiologico di un aumento del tasso di attività metabolica ed è caratterizzato da un aumento anormale del tasso metabolico basale del corpo. L'ipermetabolismo è accompagnato da una varietà di sintomi interni ed esterni, in particolare perdita di peso estrema e può anche essere un sintomo in sé. Questo stato di maggiore attività metabolica può segnalare problemi di base, in particolare ipertiroidismo o insonnia familiare fatale. L'ipermetabolismo può verificarsi in particolare nel cervello dopo un danno cerebrale traumatico. La causa e la localizzazione dei sintomi ipermetabolici all'interno del corpo possono essere accuratamente rilevati mediante la scansione PET. Sintomi di solito scendono una volta che la malattia o lesioni sottostanti vengono trattati.
