L'idealismo è il gruppo di filosofie che affermano che la realtà, o la realtà come possiamo conoscerla, è fondamentalmente mentale, costruita mentalmente o altrimenti immateriale. Epistemologicamente, l'idealismo si manifesta come uno scetticismo sulla possibilità di conoscere qualsiasi cosa indipendente dalla mente. In un senso sociologico, l'idealismo sottolinea come le idee umane - in particolare le credenze e i valori - fanno forma della società. Come dottrina ontologica, l'idealismo va oltre, affermando che tutte le entità sono composte di mente o di spirito. L'idealismo respinge quindi le teorie fisico e dualiste che non riescono a attribuire priorità alla mente. I primi argomenti esistenti che il mondo dell'esperienza è fondato nel derivato mentale dell'India e della Grecia. Gli idealisti indù in India e i neoplatonisti greci hanno dato argomenti panentheistic per una coscienza tutto pervaso come la terra o la vera natura della realtà. Al contrario, la scuola Yogācāra, sorta nel Mahayana Buddhism in India nel IV secolo dC, fondò in larga misura il suo idealismo "solo mentale" sulle analisi fenomenologiche dell'esperienza personale.
