La fusione di confinamento inerziale è un tipo di ricerca di energia di fusione che tenta di avviare le reazioni di fusione nucleare mediante il riscaldamento e la compressione di un bersaglio di combustibile, tipicamente sotto forma di un pallone che più spesso contiene una miscela di deuterio e tritium. Per comprimere e riscaldare il carburante, l'energia viene consegnata allo strato esterno del bersaglio utilizzando fasci ad alta energia di luce laser, elettroni o ioni, anche se per vari motivi quasi tutti i dispositivi ICF ad oggi hanno utilizzato laser. Lo strato esterno riscaldato esplode verso l'esterno, generando una forza di reazione contro il resto del bersaglio, accelerandolo verso l'interno, compresso il bersaglio. Questo processo è stato progettato per creare onde d'urto che attraversano l'obiettivo. Un insieme sufficientemente potente di onde d'urto può comprimere e riscaldare il carburante al centro in modo che le reazioni di fusione si verificano. L'energia liberata da queste reazioni allora riscalda il combustibile circostante e se il riscaldamento è abbastanza forte potrebbe anche iniziare a subire la fusione. L'obiettivo di ICF è quello di produrre una condizione nota come "accensione", in cui questo processo di riscaldamento provoca una reazione a catena che brucia una parte significativa del combustibile.
