Nella fisica, un riferimento di riferimento inerziale è un quadro di riferimento che descrive tempo e spazio in modo omogeneo, isotropico e in modo indipendente dal tempo. Tutti i fotogrammi inerziali sono in uno stato di movimento costante e rettilineo rispetto all'altro; Un accelerometro che si muove con uno di loro avrebbe rilevato zero accelerazione. Le misurazioni in un unico fotogramma inerziale possono essere convertite in misurazioni in un'altra con una semplice trasformazione. Nella relatività generale, in una regione abbastanza piccola per la curvatura dello spazio tempo essere trascurabile, si può trovare un insieme di fotogrammi inerziali che descrivono approssimativamente quella regione. Le leggi fisiche hanno la stessa forma in tutti i fotogrammi inerziali. Al contrario, in un frame di riferimento non inerziale le leggi della fisica variano a seconda dell'accelerazione di quel fotogramma rispetto ad un fotogramma inerziale e le solite forze fisiche devono essere integrate da forze fittizie. Ad esempio, una palla caduta verso il suolo non va esattamente dritto perché la Terra sta ruotando. Qualcuno che ruota con la Terra deve rappresentare l'effetto Coriolis - in questo caso pensato come forza - per prevedere il movimento orizzontale.
