L'inerenza si riferisce all'idea di Empedocle che le qualità della materia proviene dalle proporzioni relative di ciascuno dei quattro elementi che entrano in una cosa. L'idea fu ulteriormente sviluppata da Platone e Aristotele. Quel Platone ha accettato l'affermazione di Empedocles si può vedere nel Timio.
