L'intensificatore è un termine linguistico per un modificatore che non contribuisce al significato proposizionale di una clausola ma serve a migliorare e dare un contesto emotivo aggiuntivo alla parola che modifica. Gli intensificatori sono espletamenti grammaticali, in particolare attributi esasperanti, perché funzionano come riempitivo semantically vacuous. Caratteristica, l'inglese attira intensificatori da una classe di parole chiamati modificatori di grado, parole che quantificano l'idea che modifica. Più in particolare, derivano da un gruppo di parole chiamate avverbi di grado, noto anche come avverbi di grado. Tuttavia, quando utilizzati grammaticamente come intensificatori, queste parole cessano di essere adesivi di grado, perché non quantificano più l'idea che modificano. Invece, lo sottolineano emozionalmente. Al contrario, le parole sono moderatamente, leggermente e poco sono adesivi di grado, ma non intensificatori. L'altro segno distintivo degli intensificatori prototipici è che sono degli avverti che non hanno la caratteristica primaria degli avverbi: la capacità di modificare i verbi. Gli intensificatori modificano esclusivamente aggettivi e avverbi.
