Ionizzazione
L'ionizzazione è il processo attraverso il quale un atomo o una molecola acquista una carica negativa o positiva guadagnando o perdendo gli elettroni. Ionizzazione deriva dall'interazione di un atomo o di una molecola con una particella sub-atomica o onde elettromagnetiche sulla breve estremità d'onda dello spettro elettromagnetico che hanno abbastanza energia cinetica per provocare la ionizzazione. L'ionizzazione può avvenire in assenza di un'influenza esterna attraverso un processo di conversione interno, attraverso il quale un nucleo eccitato trasferisce l'energia a uno degli elettroni interni e lo espelle con un'elevata energia cinetica. È anche riscontrato in molti campi di interesse pratico, che vanno dalla spettroscopia di massa alla radioterapia per l'eliminazione delle cellule tumorali.
