La giurisprudenza è lo studio e la teoria della legge. Gli studiosi in giurisprudenza, conosciuti anche come teorici legali, sperano di ottenere una comprensione più approfondita della natura della legge, del ragionamento legale, dei sistemi giuridici e delle istituzioni legali. La giurisprudenza moderna è iniziata nel XVIII secolo e si è concentrata sui primi principi della legge naturale, del diritto civile e della legge delle nazioni. La giurisprudenza generale può essere suddivisa in categorie sia dal tipo di studiosi che cercano di rispondere, sia dalle teorie della giurisprudenza o delle scuole di pensiero, in merito a come rispondere meglio a queste domande. La filosofia giuridica contemporanea, che riguarda la giurisprudenza generale, affronta i problemi in due gruppi ruvidi: ▪ problemi interni alla legge e ai sistemi giuridici come tali. ▪ Problemi di legge come istituzioni sociali particolari in quanto si riferiscono alla più grande situazione politica e sociale in cui esiste. Le risposte a queste domande provengono da quattro scuole elementari di pensiero in generale la giurisprudenza: ▪ La legge naturale è l'idea che ci siano limiti oggettivi razionali per il potere dei governanti legislativi.
